The Gospel

  • The word "gospel" simply means good news.
  • This good news is not advice on how to become a better person, nor a list of rules to follow. It is an announcement—news about something God has already done in Jesus Christ. 
  • But it is not merely news to consider. It is a command to obey. Jesus began His ministry saying, "Repent and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:15) It's not an invitation to consider something, but a summons. So this is good news that must be believed, and a command that must be obeyed.
  • But before you can truly understand why this news is good, we must first start with understanding who God is.
GOD'S PERFECTION: He Is Holy
  • God is morally perfect and pure (Isaiah 6:3; Exodus 15:11). He is a God of goodness, justice, and righteousness (Jeremiah 9:23–24; Psalm 7:11). 
  • His eyes are too pure to approve of evil, and He cannot look on wickedness with favor (Habakkuk 1:13). Nothing is hidden from Him. Everything is open and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account (Hebrews 4:13).
  • Because God is perfectly good, He is also perfectly fair. A judge who looked the other way when someone was harmed wouldn't be a good judge, he'd be a corrupt one. God will not look the other way.
  • So the real question isn't whether God will deal with sin. He will. The question is how a perfectly good God could ever forgive a sinner and still be fair.
  • That's the question the good news answers.

MAN'S PROBLEM: All Have Sinned against God
  • There is no one righteous, not even one (Romans 3:10). All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
  •  The Bible says we were dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:1–3). The problem isn't just our record. It's our hearts.
  • Sin separates us from God. Your sins have made a separation between you and God (Isaiah 59:2). Even our best efforts are like a filthy garment before the holy God (Isaiah 64:6).
  • The soul who sins will die (Ezekiel 18:4). It is appointed for us to die once, and after that comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27).
  • That's the bad news. And it's what makes the good news so good.
GOD'S PROVISION: A Savior in Your Place
  • God did not leave us there. God sent forth His Son.
  • In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  (1 John 4:10). God made Jesus, who never sinned, to be sin on our behalf so that we could be made right with God through Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  • Jesus was offered once to bear the sins of many (Hebrews 9:28). He suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He could bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). He was buried, and He rose from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said He would (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
  • There is salvation in no one else. There is no other name given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25).
  • This is how God can forgive and still be fair. The penalty wasn't dismissed. Jesus paid it in full.

MAN'S PART: Repent and Believe
  • A man once asked, "What must I do to be saved?" (Acts 16:30). Jesus Himself gave the answer: repent and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15).
  • To repent means to change your mind, heart, and will about your sin—to stop making excuses for it, to confess it, and to turn away from it.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
  • To believe means more than agreeing that the facts are true. Even the demons believe that God is one and they shudder (James 2:19). It means trusting Jesus with everything. Believing means trust or to have faith. Saving faith stops looking to itself for a solution and rests entirely on Jesus Christ.
  • If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9–10). The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16).
  • For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8–9).
GOD'S PROMISE: Eternal Life
  • Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. But whoever rejects the Son will not see life, and the wrath of God remains on him (John 3:36).
  • These things were written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:13).
  • Jesus said, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand" (John 10:28–29). Everyone the Father gives Him will come to Him, and He will never turn them away (John 6:37). 
  • And the God who began a good work in you will finish it (Philippians 1:6).
YOUR RESPONSE: Reject or Believe?
  • Will you reject this good news, or believe it?
  • Jesus Christ offers eternal life to anyone who will turn from sin and trust in Him.
  • But if you turn Him away, the very words you refused will be what judges you on the last day (John 12:48). And unless you believe that He is who He said He is, you will die in your sins (John 8:24). How will we escape if we ignore a salvation this great? (Hebrews 2:3).
  • Behold, now is the acceptable time. Behold, now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).
